Who is working remotely?
How common remote work is within a company depends on many factors. Unsurprisingly, large, digitalized enterprises were better prepared for this prompt swift. However, differences could also be observed
among sectors in the location of companies, and in the demographic and educational characteristics of the employees. For instance, the sectors of media and communication, energy, insurance and finance, real estate, and education were estimated to have the largest share of employees working remotely. When it comes to
geographical factors, people living in larger cities were more likely to work from home than those living in small municipalities. Furthermore,
employees aged 35 to 44 years, and with a
higher education made up the largest percentages of remote workers.
Preferences of employees
Remote work has a wide range of
positive and negative sides and the opinions among employees can vary significantly. There is a general agreement that working from home leads to a better work-life balance, with
benefits such as less commuting time, and the opportunity to have lunch with family or partners. On the other hand, some people might
find it hard to spend so much time working at home. For instance, when the
equipment provided is inadequate, or when the relations with coworkers play an important role in one's social life. Indeed, different studies have found that employees tend to prefer hybrid work, in order to fulfill the different needs of everyone.
