Statistics report on the use of NFC, mobile wallets and payments with wearables in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg
All over the world, paper money and coins is said to be increasingly replaced by new, digital payment methods. Of these methods, contactless or "tap and go" payments receive the most attention. These allow consumers to swipe their card, smartphone or a wearable device (a smart watch, fitness tracker or a ring) pas a terminal when paying for their purchase. How popular are these new payment methods in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg?
This report presents several statistics that come close on showing the developments on this front within the three countries. Most notably, the three countries approach this topic differently from each other. In the Netherlands, for example, the popularity of contactless payments via card might pave the way for wearables. In Belgium, on the hand, it is a domestic app that slowly convinces consumers to use contactless more often. Finally, figures for Luxembourg are rare, but online banking was popular there.
This report is one of the two Benelux studies that focuses on digital payments, with the other report specifically looking at debit and credit cards in the Benelux region.
