Mario is one of the most recognizable and popular video game characters of all time. The lovable plumber has featured in over 200 games across all genres, dating back to the arcade game, Donkey Kong, first released in 1981.Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Switch has sold 61.97 million units since its release in 2017 and is the top Mario game based on sales. Super Mario Bros. is the second-most successful game in the franchise, having sold an estimated 40.24 million copies worldwide. The platform game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 and allowed players to control Mario as he made his way through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue the princess from the evil Bowser. The Mario franchise also features several spin-off series, the most successful being the Mario Kart series.
