England: Number of admissions to NHS hospitals 2000-2023

The number of admissions has increased year-on-year from 2000 to 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, hospital admission dropped in 2020/21. In 2022/23 there were around 16.4 million admissions to hospitals, showing that admission numbers are slowly increasing to levels before the pandemic. This statistic displays the number of admissions to NHS hospitals in England from 2000/01 to 2022/23.

FAEs are counted against the year in which the admission episode finishes. Admissions do not represent the number of inpatients, as a person may have more than one admission within the year.
