This statistic distributes the different types of state guardianships for minors under the child protection system in Spain as of December 2017. Temporary guardianships accounted for half of the total amount of custodies that the Spanish authorities processed, closely followed by those custodies resulting from the voluntary relinquishment of parental rights, which accounted for 48 percent.

- Guardianship: decision reached by the appropriate authority by which the state takes responsibility of the child's custody. Unlike ex lege custody, declaration of abandonment is not required by the appropriate authority.
- Voluntary relinquishment of guardianship: the legal guardian of the minors voluntarily forfeit their parental rights on the grounds that they do not have the means to provide for them. The local authorities therefore takes over the guardianship of the minors.
- Temporary guardianship: decision reached by the appropriate authority by which the state temporarily takes responsibility of the child's custody. This can be solicited by the legal guardians or by the local authorities.
