In 2021, the share of own-account workers who were in the informal non-agricultural sector in Malaysia was at 58.2 percent, an increase compared to 43.4 percent in 2019. Own-account workers, or individuals who hold self-employed jobs, made up the majority of workers in the informal non-agricultural sector.

According to the ILO, "own-account workers are those workers who, working on their own account or with one or more partners, hold the type of job defined as a self- employed job, and have not engaged on a continuous basis any employees to work for them during the reference period. "
