In 2021, there were 72 percent of own-account workers in the informal sector in Malaysia, a slight increase compared to 71.7 percent in 2019. Own-account workers, or those working individually or with a partner and hold self-employed jobs, made up the majority of workers in the informal sector.

According to the ILO, "own-account workers are those workers who, working on their own account or with one or more partners, hold the type of job defined as a self- employed job, and have not engaged on a continuous basis any employees to work for them during the reference period. "
