In the UK, the share of medical graduates from abroad have increased in recent years. In 2023, roughly one in ten registered doctors received their primary medical qualification (PMQ) in the European Economic Area (EEA) excluding the UK. Moreover, another third of doctors were international medical graduates (IMG).
While the number of licensed doctors who are EEA graduates have increased, the share of EEA graduates has slowly decreased since 2014, this was when the general medical council decided to tighten the English language skill required of doctors from the EEA practicing in the UK.
