In 2021, around 188 thousand metric tons of kakis were produced in Japan, the lowest amount of the past decade. While production volumes are prone to stark fluctuations, figures were generally on a steady downward trend over the course of the last decade after they peaked in 2012 at close to 254 thousand tons. Japanese persimmons are common throughout East Asia, and various healing properties are attributed to the fruit.
