In 2021, the turnover of the global space economy was approximately 469.3 billion U.S. dollars, an increase from 446.9 billion U.S. dollars in the previous year. The most important sector in the global space economy in 2021 was the commercial space products and services, accounting for almost 48 percent of the total turnover.
Global governments spending on space programs
Despite the pandemic of COVID-19, the government expenditure on space programs worldwide has been increasing in the past years. In 2020, government spending on space programs worldwide amounted to 82.5 billion U.S. dollars, which represented an increase of around 16.5 percent in comparison to the previous year. The United States was the leading spender in 2020.
Space agencies around the world
Responsible for the civilian space programs, as well as aeronautics and space research, the space agencies had gained a lot of importance in the past decades. Since its establishment in 1958, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has become the most important space agency in the world. In 2021, the NASA's approved budget amounted to approximately 23.3 billion U.S. dollars, from which almost 60 percent was directed to the science and exploration sectors.
