National newspaper readership in Australia in 2022

Of the many newspapers in circulation in Australia, two are distributed nationwide, namely The Australian and The Australian Financial Review. As of September 2022, print and digital readership of The Australian averaged 4.4 million. Meanwhile, The Australian Financial Review reached an average of approximately 3.7 million readers.

  Public trust in the news

Australia’s consumers of both physical and digital news primarily consisted of older individuals belonging to the mature and baby boomer generations. As per a survey conducted over the period between January and February 2021, media outlets such as ABC News and SBS News were the most trusted news sources in Australia with 70 percent and 69 percent respondents admitting that they were trustworthy. Furthermore, 49 percent of consumers who used newspapers as the main source stated that they trusted the news.

In yet another survey, it was found that most readers who read newspapers to access local news did so primarily due to factors such as convenience and ease of access.
