The average system load of electricity in the year 2017 reached approximately 7.2 gigawatts. System load represents the total electric energy delivered to consumers in Alberta through the AIES, including transmission losses. The increase in average load in 2017 was largely due to economic growth, load recovery of Fort McMurray and energization of projects such as Fort Hills and the North West Redwater Sturgeon refinery.
