As of March 2023, the EU had an average asset encumbrance ratio of 26.5 percent. The highest ratio was recorded in Denmark at 50.2 percent, followed by Germany, France, and Italy. The European Banking Authority (EBA), who have been tracking asset encumbrance since 2015, define asset encumbrance ratio as equal to the encumbered assets of an institution and the collateral received by the institution and reused.

The European Banking Authority (EBA) defines asset encumbrance ratio as "Asset encumbrance equals total encumbered assets plus total collateral received re-used divided by total assets plus total collateral received available for encumbrance.
The source added the following information; "Individual country data includes subsidiaries, which are excluded from EU aggregate. For example, at country level the subsidiary in country X of a bank domiciled in country Y is included both in data for countries X and Y (for the latter as part of the consolidated entity). In the EU aggregate, only the consolidated entity domiciled in country Y is considered. The sample of banks is unbalanced and reviewed annually."
