The Mexican retailer El Puerto de Liverpool generated roughly 151 billion Mexican pesos in revenue in 2021. This amounts to approximately 7.5 billion U.S. dollars, considering the exchange rates of May 2022. Between 2019 and 2020, the company's annual revenue decreased in the COVID-19 year by nearly 20 percent, reversing the steady upward trend recorded since at least 2014.
Liverpool, which is headquartered in Mexico City, is present across the country with hundreds of stores in different formats, of which the Suburbia format constitutes the most important one.
Liverpool’s performance in the Mexican retail market
El Puerto de Liverpool ranked second among the most valuable Mexican retail brands in 2020, with a brand value calculated to be around 2.4 billion U.S. dollars. Liverpool was only surpassed by Bodega Aurrerá, a discount-store owned by the American retailer Walmart. In the arena of e-commerce, the company ranked among the five most popular websites in Mexico in 2021, alongside global websites of key players in the industry, like Mercado Libre and Amazon.
Leading Latin American retailers
Mexico, Brazil, and Chile are home to the retail companies with the largest annual sales in Latin America. The Chilean retailer Cencosud topped the 2020 ranking, followed by the beverage and food retailer FEMSA Comercio from Mexico. In Brazil, Via Varejo exceeded the sales revenue of its fellow competitors on the list that year. According to that list, El Puerto de Liverpool is the fourth retail power in Mexico and the seventh in the whole region.
