The results of a survey conducted by AudienceProject in the first quarter of 2020 on the most used music streaming and downloading services in the United Kingdom (UK) revealed that two-thirds of the respondents had used Spotify in the last week, while YouTube was the second most popular music streaming service in the UK, at 39 percent.
Spotify worldwide
Spotify’s subscriber base has experienced an exponential growth in the last few years and has more than doubled since early 2017. In the first quarter of 2020, Spotify had 130 million premium subscribers worldwide, up from just 18 million in the corresponding quarter of 2015. Spotify’s revenue saw subsequent growth, reaching nearly 6.8 million euros as of 2019. With regards to Spotify’s gross profit, it exceeded 1.7 billion euros in 2019, up from 128 million euros in 2018.
Music streaming services features
The survey further revealed that the most important features for UK individuals when listening to music via a streaming or downloading service were the quality of the sound and the price, with respective shares of 55 and 51 percent of respondents as of the first quarter of 2020. One fifth of the respondents said that the availability of exclusive content was the most important feature in such services, while six percent of the respondents thought the availability of video was more important.
