The primary reason for opening a new investment account, among both new investors and experienced entrants in the United States, during 2020 was to invest for retirement. Among new investors, 17 percent stated this to be the primary reason, while the share was slightly lower, at 15 percent, among experienced entrants. A large share of new investors also stated that being able to start with small amounts was a primary reason. Dips in the market, and investing for non-retirement were other common reasons among experienced entrants.
