Multi-grain bread leads the market
Bread is a staple food in the diets of many American consumers. For the 52 weeks ending March 24, 2019, fresh bread and rolls were the best-selling bakery products in the U.S. with sales amounting to approximately 13.31 billion U.S. dollars. According to estimates by Statista based on the U.S. Census data and Simmons National Consumer Survey (NHCS), 325.01 million Americans used bread in 2019, which is more than 99 percent of the total population. This figure was projected to increase to 333.71 million in 2023. Among all types of breads, whole wheat / multi-grain breads proved to be the most popular between 2011 and 2019. According to the survey, store brands or private labels, were the most consumed in 2019.
Gluten-free bread is in demand
The global shift towards healthy eating has had a positive impact on the sales of gluten-free bread in the US as well. Among the various reasons cited, choice of a better lifestyle is considered as the primary driver for choosing gluten-free breads.
