New U.S. scripted original series on Netflix 2019-2024, by genre

As of June 2024, video streaming giant Netflix reportedly released 33 new scripted drama and comedy series titles from the U.S. The source predicted an additional 124 scheduled titles to be released during 2024, bringing the total to an all-time high of 157 originals. 

Spotlight on content spending

Netflix has been ramping up investments in content production for several years. Netflix’s content spending is estimated to surpass 17 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, whereas it stood below seven billion in 2016. The company also continues to expand its portfolio of original series and movie productions from outside the United States. A timeline of Netflix’s domestic and international commissions reveals that foreign content productions have exceeded domestic production since the first quarter of 2020. One popular destination outside of Netflix’s home turf is the United Kingdom, where popular shows like “The Crown” and “Bridgerton” were shot.

Popular Netflix originals

Viewers from the United States considered Netflix to be the streaming service with the best selection of original content, according to a 2022 survey. Roughly 40 percent of adults listed the SVOD pioneer as their number one choice for originals, whereas only 11 percent said the same about Amazon Prime Video. So what are audiences watching? In 2023, "The Night Agent,” “Ginny & Georgia,” and “Virgin River” were among the most viewed original streaming series in the U.S. – all produced by Netflix. Additionally, in May 2024, Netflix’s hit series “Bridgerton” was the third most in-demand digital original show.
