In 2023, the electrification rate in Indonesia was at 99.78 percent. The government targeted to reach 100 percent rate by 2024. Increasing the electrification ratio always becomes a challenging task because Indonesia has more than 17,000 islands and many communities are isolated from one another.
Electricity infrastructure in Indonesia
Indonesian geography makes building and expanding the power supply a major challenge. The networks of countless islands need to be interconnected for nationwide coverage. Logistical hurdles remain to be the biggest challenge for providing electricity in remote rural areas, especially in eastern Indonesia. Most of the electricity networks across the archipelago are owned and operated by the state-owned electricity provider PLN.
Indonesia’s electricity mix
The energy mix differs depending on the size of the network and the consumption and in general, Indonesia relies heavily on coal to generate electricity. However, since Indonesia has signed the Paris Climate Agreement, Indonesia has committed to increasing renewable energies to at least 23 percent by 2025. In recent years, Indonesia has generated more energy from renewable sources. Coal is expected by the government to continue to play a substantial role in the next decades.
