This statistic shows the number of processed e-commerce payment transactions in Belgium from 2013 to 2016, by payment scheme (in millions). According to the Belgian branch of Wordline, the sole processor of payment transactions in the country, transactions with either a Visa or a Mastercard reached a total of approximately 64 million in 2016. Credit cards were the leading payment method for online purchases in Belgium in the first quarter of 2017. Its market share, however, decreased in favor of Bancontact.
Bancontact is a local payment scheme and is the Belgian market leader when it comes to electronic payment methods. Its online payment scheme can be used by all customers with a Bancontact branded payment card. These are issued by more than 20 Belgian banks.
