The Japanese road network has a hierarchical structure that classifies from bottom to top municipal roads, prefectural roads, national highways, and national expressways. Their classification is based on their function and implicates their jurisdiction, administrator, and financing.

Figures are 'real lengths'. According to the source, real length of roads refers to the length of roads minus duplicate length (duplicate sections), length not in service (sections for which no notification of commencement of service has been provided) and water length (sections on the sea, rivers, lakes or marshes where ferrying services are available).
Due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, figures after 2010 partly include data for city, town and village roads as of April 1 of previous years.
