European webshop penetration rate in the Netherlands 2015-2019
When it comes to e-commerce, the Netherlands ranks fifth within the EU-28. In the European Union, 57 percent of the consumers used online shopping with the United Kingdom being the country where it is most common to purchase goods or services online. 82 percent of its people bought something online, wheras this was 79 percent of consumers in the Netherlands. Language barriers and the local presence of Amazon seem to be important drivers for online shopping in Europe. Online shoppers from Ireland, Austria and Belgium, for example, seem more likely to buy products from a foreign e-commerce retailer. Chances were less in the Netherlands, however, as the country had a strongly developed domestic e-commerce market with companies like Bol.com or Coolblue.
