This statistic displays the annual sales of petrol and diesel fuel in the European Union (EU-28) from 2001 to 2016, in million liters. The majority of fuel sales during this time period were for diesel. Diesel fuel sales had a share of 55.6 percent of total fuel sales in 2001, and increased to 71.8 percent by 2016. In 2016 diesel sales were 156,368 million liters more than petrol sales.
