In 2021, Enel Brasil was the leading company in Brazil’s electricity sector, based on revenue. The company generated more than 51 billion Brazilian reals worth of revenue that year. Neoenergia followed, at just under over 41 billion Brazilian reals. Meanwhile, former sector leader CPFL Energia ranked third.
Brazil’s electricity giants
With a net revenue that has more than quintupled between 2016 and 2021, Enel Brasil has seen impressive growth in recent years. The company was also one of the largest electric companies in Latin America. In fact, electric utilities headquartered in Brazil occupied eight out of the top ten positions in the region that year. In terms of electricity distribution, Cemig was the leader in the country.
Renewables driving sector growth
Solar and wind plants accounted for roughly 80 percent of Brazil’s planned electricity generation capacity additions as of early 2022, and some of the country’s largest energy companies are at the forefront of these developments. Neoenergia, a part of Spanish group Iberdrola, has wind farms under construction with a combined capacity of about one gigawatt. Enel Brasil, a subsidiary of Italian Enel Group, boasted a capacity of three gigawatts of wind and solar facilities. Their parent companies are among a new wave of energy sector leaders heavily investing in renewables, the so-called Green Supermajors.
