Per capita consumption of beer in Finland 2017-2023
Finland's beer consumption has been on a steady decline in recent years, reflecting a shift in the country's drinking habits. In 2023, Finns consumed 3.4 liters of beer per person, measured in pure alcohol content, among those aged 15 and above. This represents a notable decrease from 4 liters per capita in 2017, indicating a changing landscape in Finland's alcohol consumption patterns.
Changing preferences in alcoholic beverages
While beer consumption has decreased, other alcoholic beverages have seen varying trends. Wine consumption also declined during the same period, with Finns drinking 1.5 liters per person in 2023. On the other side, mixed alcoholic drinks saw an overall increase, with consumption rising to 0.8 liters per person in 2023. This shift suggests that Finns may be diversifying their alcohol choices, moving away from traditional favorites like beer and exploring other options.
Beer remains popular in Finland
Despite the downward trend in consumption, beer continues to dominate Finland's alcohol market. A 2023 national alcohol survey about alcohol consumption revealed that beer accounted for 49 percent of all alcohol consumption in restaurants and 45 percent of domestic alcohol consumption. While overall beer consumption has decreased, it still maintains a significant lead over other alcoholic beverages in terms of popularity.
