In 2023, most companies selling electricity in Italy were operating in the deregulated market. Their number increased from 450 in 2014 to 707 in 2023, peaking in 2021 at 923. That same year, the Italian government decided to set an end to the regulated electricity market. The liberalization of the market was effective in 2023 for small and micro-enterprises, and will be in 2024 for domestic consumers.
