In 2021, the French ATMO index calculated at the air quality monitoring station located in the 4th arrondissement in Paris reported an average air quality for 77 percent of the days of the year. The fact that the air quality seems to have worsened between 2020 and 2021 is an effect of the introduction of the new ATMO index. In reality, France's air quality has been improving in the last decade.
French ATMO air quality index for the city of Paris from 2011 to 2021, as a percentage of the number of days per level*
* The French index ATMO characterizes the daily air quality.
A new ATMO index was introduced in 2021. It accounts for sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and fine dust (PM10 and PM2.5). Prior to 2021, the ATMO index did not include PM2.5 particles. The index is determined from the maximum daily concentration of SO2, NO2, and O3, and the average daily concentration of PM10 and PM2.5.
The scale of the new ATMO index is: extremely bad, very bad, bad, poor, average, good. The previous scale went from 1 (very good) to 10 (very bad).
While until 2020 the ATMO index gave an indication of the air quality for the whole Parisian agglomeration, the new ATMO index is computed for a municipality.
As of 2021, the ATMO index displayed in this statistic is calculated using the measurements of the air quality monitoring station of the 4th arrondissement of Paris.
