Value of medical device imports to Japan 2013-2022

In 2022, approximately 2.9 trillion Japanese yen of medical devices were imported to Japan. This marked an increase compared to 2.74 trillion yen in the previous year. 

Trade of medical devices

In recent years, orthopedic articles and cannulaes and catheters of assorted tip configurations were the medical devices that were imported to Japan the most. The United States has continued to be predominant in terms of medical device imports to the nation. The U.S. was also Japan’s largest partner of medical device exports, followed by China and Germany. That year, the export value of medical devices from Japan to overseas destinations amounted to over one trillion yen.

Medical devices include products such as diagnostic equipment, therapeutic equipment, and general equipment and supplies. Japan is one of the world’s major manufacturers of medical devices. Japanese company Olympus Corporation, for example, is a leading company in the gastrointestinal endoscope field.
