This statistic shows the total number of insurance companies in Germany from 1998 to 2016, by type of insurance. In 2016, more than half of the insurance companies were active in the branch of property and casualty insurance (in Continental Europe known as "non-life insurance"). The German insurance market is marked with many differences between the companies, both in size and the products offered. In a 2016 interview conducted with over 23,000 respondents , 24 percent of them indicated they had one or more insurances at Allianz, making it the biggest insurer of Germany.
