As of May 2024, there were a total of 58 nuclear reactors operative in France, distributed across 18 different sites. The site with the highest number of reactors was Gravelines, in northern France. Even though the share of nuclear energy in total energy production has been decreasing since the 2000s, nuclear power plants still account for around 65 percent of the total power generation in the country.
Power mix of France
In 2023, the production of electricity in France included almost 320 terawatt-hours originating from nuclear power, while hydropower and wind turbines generated approximately 60 and 50 terawatt-hours, respectively. In 2024, the country was planning the construction of a new nuclear reactor in Flamanville, which has the potential to become one of the largest in the country.
Renewable energy sources in France
Although nuclear energy is likely to continue dominating France's electricity mix in the years to come, it was forecast that renewables will account for the largest capacity increase by 2030. Onshore and offshore wind plants' capacity was projected to double compared to 2022 levels, while solar energy's capacity was projected to increase by threefold.
