Number of supermarkets in Singapore 2016-2017, by chain
Popularity of supermarkets
The supermarket landscape in Singapore is dominated by three big players: NTUC, which operates all NTUC FairPrice chains; Dairy Farm International Holdings (DFI), which operates the Cold Storage and Giant chains of supermarkets, as well as Market Place; and Sheng Siong. The grocery sector is a lucrative one in food-obsessed Singapore, and locals spend more time shopping in supermarkets than they do in any other retail locale.
Offline versus online
With the development of e-commerce, supermarkets in Singapore are facing competition from online grocery retailers, which offer the convenience of home delivery and shopping from anywhere with an internet connection. Supermarket chains have adapted to this changing retail landscape, launching their own online stores. However, the shopping habits of Singaporeans indicate that they mostly purchased non-food items online. The sensory experience of food shopping still has a strong appeal, and brick-and-mortar grocery retail stores are still relevant to the Singaporean consumer.
