In fiscal year 2021, around 343 million Indians were covered under government-sponsored health insurance schemes across India, including the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY). This was a consistent growth in the number of people covered under such health insurance schemes compared to just around 161 million people in fiscal year 2012.
The National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) was formerly called Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. It was later shifted to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and renamed Rashtriya Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (RSSY) in fiscal year 2017.
