Italy: net generation capacity of biomass-waste 2015 to 2050
In the EU Reference Scenario 2016, it was forecasted that the generation capacity of biomass-waste in Italy will reach 6,114 megawatts by the end of 2050, a remarkable increased compared to 2015. In 2017, Italy was the fifth European country for primary energy production from solid biomass, with an amount of energy produced equal to 7.7 million tons of oil equivalent. In Germany – which ranked first in the EU – the energy generated from solid biomass amounted to 12 million tons of oil equivalent.
Energy from biomass
A glance at historical data reveals that in Italy, the gross energy production from biomass and waste increased from 10,832 gigawatt hours in 2010 to 19,282 gigawatt hours in 2017. During the last year considered, biomass accounted for six percent of the total Italian energy mix.
Heat from solid biomasses
In 2017, the household direct consumption of heat generated from solid biomasses peaked at 282,916 terajoules. Firewood was the most common type of biomass among householders. Also, in recent years pellet became increasingly popular.
