Transfer spending by clubs in the Big Five is mostly concentrated during the summer months. In the summer months of 2021, the Big Five spent approximately 3.5 billion euros, whereas in the winter the clubs spent 309 million euros. The highest share of Big Five clubs' transfer fees, 39 percent in 2021, went to clubs in other Big Five leagues.
What is the Premier League?
The English Premier League is one of the Big Five leagues and is considered to be the most-followed and best-known football league in the world. The Premier League in its current format, comprising 20 clubs, was formed in 1992, breaking away from the Football League, which was originally founded in 1888.
The Premier League: growing in every aspect
Over the last decade, Premier League clubs have spent billions in transfer fees. In 2021, transfer fee spending amounted to approximately 1.7 billion euros. The majority of revenue comes from broadcasting, which generated just over 3.3 billion British pounds during the 2020/21 season. In the 2022/23 season, the clubs of the Premier League are projected to earn around 790 million British pounds from matchdays.
