Number of overnight visitors to Prague 2012-2023
Around 7.44 million guests were recorded at accommodation establishments in Prague in 2023. Following a period of growth, tourism was negatively affected in 2020 by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, causing figures to fall compared to previous years. Even in 2023, the figures have not yet reached their pre-pandemic heights yet.
Internationally beloved Prague
There are many attributes given to Prague, the capital city of Czechia, many of which describe its beauty and specific features. With its long, rich history and stunning landmarks, it has often been given the title of Mother of Cities, and as such, it remains one of the most visited cities in Europe, despite the recent slump in tourist numbers. Prague is a popular destination, mainly for international tourists. Around three-fourths fourths of the total overnight visitors in 2022 came from abroad. The proximity of the visitors’ home country plays an important role here, as most tourists who came to Prague that year were from neighboring countries of Germany and Slovakia. However, in the third place came visitors from the USA, for whom Prague is frequently a must-see on their European trips. There used to be many visitors from countries in East Asia, such as China or South Korea. However, since the pandemic, this trend has not yet returned. In 2022, the number of passengers at the Václav Havel Airport in Prague amounted to 10.7 million, seven million less than in 2019.
So many things to see, yet so little time
From monumental castles and churches over medieval bridges and narrow streets to modern cafés and shopping centers, Prague has plenty to offer for everybody. But there are attractions that exceed the rest in their popularity. In 2022, most tourists bought a ticket to go on the Petřín funicular, which took them to the top of the Petřín hill with a wonderful view of Prague. This view can be further enhanced by going up the lookout tower, which was the city’s 6th most visited attraction in 2022. Other popular destinations included the famed Prague Castle with the St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague Zoological Garden, or the water park AquaPalace in the city’s vicinity.
