In 2023, around 1.5 million metric tons of styrene rubber were produced in South Korea. This represents an increase from about 1.45 million metric tons in the previous year, which was the highest within a decade. Styrene rubber, or styrene-butadiene rubber, is the most produced type of synthetic rubber and is commonly used in the manufacture of cars.
Rubber production in South Korea
The elasticity and durability of rubber have made it an important material for many industries outside of the automotive industry, such as pharmaceuticals and commercial goods. South Korea produces little to no natural rubber. Despite this, the country is responsible for around 12 percent of global synthetic rubber production, making it a large international player in the rubber industry.
South Korean petrochemical exports
With the help of large companies such as LG Chem and Kumho Petrochemicals, South Korea's expertise in the production of such petrochemicals has helped its export-oriented economy throughout the years. In terms of destinations, most synthetic rubber exported from South Korea goes to China, Malaysia, and the United States. Other petrochemicals, such as synthetic resins, fibers, and other specialty chemicals, are also key export materials for South Korea.
