In the period from January to July 2020, the maritime terminal Ponta da Madeira was the leading port in total cargo handling in Brazil, with over 98.5 million metric tons in throughput. This terminal also ranked first in the list of leading Brazilian ports in export throughput that same year. Porto de Santos, the second port in this ranking, handled roughly 66 million metric tons of export and import cargo during that same period.
