UK has largest number of SPAR supermarkets
In total, there were roughly 13,000 SPAR stores worldwide. In its country of origin, the Netherlands, SPAR had 456 stores in 2019. In the United Kingdom the retailer operated more than five times as many stores, making the UK the country with the largest number of SPAR supermarkets. It was Austria however where SPAR was most successful in terms of sales, as the Austrian market alone was worth 7.2 billion euros in 2019. By comparison, in Thailand the retail sales value amounted to just 13.8 million.
The average size of a SPAR supermarket differs markedly from country to country. Whereas the average SPAR store in Germany had a size of only 75 square meters in 2019, the supermarkets this food retailer operated in India were about 55 times as large.
