Growth of Carrefour in Brazil
Since founding its first Brazilian hypermarket in São Paolo in 1975, the French multinational corporation Carrefour has made Brazil one of its major focus countries. Carrefour's gross revenue in Brazil has been increasing at a robust pace over the past decade, boosted by the 2007 purchase of the wholesale Brazilian hypermarket chain Atacadão.
Merging with the competition
Together, Carrefour and Atacadão are the largest companies in Brazil's retail sector, based on annual net revenue. Carrefour came even closer to a monopoly when the company attempted to purchase its largest competitor, Grupo Pão de Açúcar (GPA). However, the negotiations were ultimately dropped, after facing significant public and political resistance, as well as the rejection of GPA's co-owner Casino — a French multinational retail conglomerate in competition with Carrefour.
