According to a recent study, plastic items made up 80 percent of the collected litter on beaches in Italy in 2020, while the second most widespread materials were glass and ceramic (10 percent). The significant presence of glass and ceramics is due primarily to the presence of building material and glass bottles.
On 43 monitored beaches (189,000 square meters), volunteers found over 28 thousand pieces of waste, with an average of 654 items of waste per 100 linear meters of beach.
