In 2020, the leading causes of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States were mental health conditions, cardiovascular conditions, and infection. These three leading underlying causes were responsible for over half of all pregnancy-related deaths in 2020. Mental health conditions alone accounted for one in five of all pregnancy-related deaths in the U.S. showing how important it is to screen for postpartum depression.
