During the fiscal year 2021 (ranging from October 2020 to September 2021), nearly 42.6 percent of New Panamax class vessels transiting the Panama Canal were container ships. Meanwhile, containers made up around 11.4 percent of Panamax class vessels, whereas dry bulk carriers made up for some 29 percent of transit through this lock type.

Panamax class ships are those designed to be able to comply with the maximum dimensions authorized for circulation through the first and second set of lock chambers of the Panama Canal. Vessels designed to transit through the third set of locks (larger than the original two) are called New Panamax (or Neopanamax).
