This statistic presents the results of a survey among households across rural and urban India about the share of undernourished adult women in 2016. In urban households, the share of undernourished women was lowest with 15.5 percent, while in rural areas, it was almost 27 percent. This was a decrease from 2005-06, when the total share of malnourished adult women was about 35.5 percent.

*According to the source, these are women between 15 and 49 years old whose BMI was below normal (less than 18.5 kilograms per meter square).
Figures do not include pregnant women and women who gave birth two months preceding the survey.
Body mass index is body mass divided by the square of the body height, and is universally expressed in units of kilograms per meter square. Commonly accepted BMI ranges are underweight: under 18.5 kg/m2, normal weight: 18.5 to 25, overweight: 25 to 30, obese: over 30.
