A type of payment which could be affected by PSD2 is the so-called Near Field Communication (NFC) payment, a method which involves contactless payments made at points of sales with either a debit card or a mobile phone or payments via QR codes. These methods are currently supported and developed by Dutch banks, such as ING and Rabobank, with larger Fintech-services such as Android Pay, Apple Pay and Pay from Samsung not yet being released in the Netherlands. Between the fourth quarter of 2014 and the fourth quarter of 2016, the share of NFC payments compared to total debit card payments in the Netherlands increased from approximately 0.5 percent in 2014 to approximately 23 percent in 2016.
