According to data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, the Latin America and Caribbean region had the highest rate of start-ups worldwide in 2017, with about 11.7 percent of the working-age population involved in new entrepreneurial activities.

The start-up rate is the percentage of 18-64 population who are currently a nascent entrepreneur, i.e., actively involved in setting up a business they will own or co-own; this business has not paid salaries, wages, or any other payments to the owners for more than three months. The start-up rate can also be defined as the Nascent Entrepreneurship Rate.
