Germany has one of the highest underground gas storage capacities in Europe. As of 2021, Germany had 255 terawatt hours worth of retrievable natural gas, which was largely stored in salt caverns. This was followed by Italy, which had a working gas capacity of 195 terawatt hours. Gas may be stored underground in salt caverns, depleted gas fields, aquifers, and hard rock caverns.
