In 2016, the Italian supermarket chain Esselunga provided the online shopping service called ‘Esselunga a casa’. The retailer processed 1.35 million deliveries and generated a turnover value of 158 million euros during that year. In the twelve months ending June 2018, Italy accounted for a share of 0.5 percent of global online grocery sales. This was less than, for example, the United Kingdom (7.2 percent) or France (5.6 percent) and comparable with Croatia (0.6 percent) and Romania (0.3 percent).
Online supermarkets
Esselunga is one of the groups operating in Italian retail industry, holding nine percent of the domestic market. Data referred to online sales of supermarkets showed that their values has increased significantly. In September 2018, it was reported the highest percentage change of 42.2 percent, if compared to the same period of previous year.
Food shopping habits
When purchasing food online, Italian consumers tended to buy mostly dry goods. In 2017, fresh food made up only 31 percent of the total online grocery shopping, while alcoholic drinks accounted for nine percent.
