During the 2022/23 Ligue 1 season, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) was the football club with the highest average annual player salary. PSG players earned an average annual salary of over 11 million euros. The average salary of the next club was just over 15 percent of this, namely Marseille with 1.78 million euros.
The wage gap in French football
The numbers provided in this ranking indicate that Monaco and Olympique de Marseille (OM), two of the biggest clubs in the French league, do not offer their players even half of PSG’s average annual salary. The gap between PSG and the other French clubs is even more stark when looking at the average salary of some of the lowest ranked teams, such as Ajaccio.
PSG, one of the richest clubs in Europe
For the 2020/21 Ligue 1 season, the ten highest-paid football players in the championship were all PSG players. Since the State of Qatar took over the club in 2011, PSG became the richest club in France and one of the wealthiest in Europe.
