The quarterly value of residential mortgage lending in Belgium declined notably in 2023. Per quarter, the value of mortgage loans between 2016 and 2023 ranged between seven and 16 billion euros. In the second quarter of 2023, the market saw about 7.5 billion euros in new lending. One of the reasons for the market slowing was the increase in the interest rate - a trend observed across most European countries.
