The statistic shows the audience share of the Sanremo Music Festival's opening nights in Italy from 1987 to 2020. As of the survey period, the opening night registering the highest audience share took place in 1988 reaching 69.5 percent of the audience. In 2020, the festival's opening night reached 52.2 percent of the audience. Started in 1951, the Sanremo Music Festival is currently the most popular Italian song competition. Held annually in the Italian city of Sanremo, in Liguria, the festival is broadcasted by RAI, the national public broadcasting company. The format of the Sanremo Music Festival was the main inspiration for the Eurovision Song Contest.
